Brewing your own wine at home

If you’ve been to a party where drinks are served, you’ll agree with me that the type and quality of wine served matters a great deal. In a way, serving the best wine adds some degree of pomp in the party.

Most people assume that great wine can only be manufactured in wineries not knowing that they too can learn how to make it in their houses using a home winemaking kit.

I don’t know about you, but learning how to brew my own wine is the best thing that has happened to me, and I would love to share the knowledge with you.

Before we proceed with the actual process of winemaking, let’s look at the things that you will need.

To make your own wine, you need to have winemaking equipment. The best way to go about this is to buy a home winemaking kit that will come with the necessary ingredients.

You can buy this kit from wine selling stores within your locality, or you have a look at Easy beer and wine for their recommendations on wine kits before you shop for one online, whichever way is convenient for you.

Recipe Book

If you are not a winemaking specialist, then you definitely need a guide to help you. I would advise that you go for a recipe book that has simple and easy to understand steps.

You can ask a friend to recommend a good winemaking recipe book to use or check from the internet.

Extra Ingredients

Aside from the ingredients that come in the home winemaking kit, you also need other ingredients like fresh fruit.

You are at liberty to use any fruit that suits your taste. However, it is always advisable to use those fruits that are in season because it is cheaper to buy them and easier to access.

You can also opt for grape concentrate if you do not want to use fresh fruits.

However, if you want to enjoy and know how to make good wine at home, I would advise that you use fresh fruit and not grape concentrates.

It gives more satisfaction and produces a higher wine density compared to concentrates.

The Process

Step 1: Begin by preparing the fruit you are going to use. Different fruits are prepared differently, and your recipe should you understand how, and what quantity is required.

Once you’ve finished preparing the fruit, get a clean bucket and hot water, say five liters. It is important to note that you can use any volume of water depending on the amount of wine you want to make.

Step 2: Put your fruit into the bucket, add hot water, and then add sugar. Stir your mixture thoroughly and then cover the bucket with a clean linen cloth. Once the temperatures have dropped a bit, add yeast to the mix and stir again, this time occasionally in the next 24 hours.

Step 3: After 24 hours, you can now sieve your mixture through gauze into the demijohn. You can throw away the remains of fruit that are trapped and collect the clear liquor which sieved through.

Step 4: Add pectin enzyme capsule to the sieved liquor to catalyze the fermentation process, and make the wine clearer. You can then lock your mixture and allow it to ferment in a warm place.

Step 5: After fermentation is complete, sediments will have settled at the bottom of the demijohn, and clear wine will be on the top. Ensure that you are always storing your wine in a warm place to prevent it from deteriorating.

I know this is just a short article and is not the complete story, but I hope you understand that it is easy to make wine at home.
